Material Selection Guide for Custom CNC Machining & Die Cast Components

Improper material selection is one of the most common causes of product performance failure, excessive production cost and long-term after-sales issues for global equipment manufacturers. Different metal raw materials vary greatly in density, thermal conductivity, corrosion resistance, casting forming ability, machining difficulty and unit cost. There is no universal "best alloy" for all projects; the optimal material must be matched according to your product’s working environment, functional requirements, weight limit and budget.
From thousands of overseas custom projects we delivered, we have summarized many typical material selection mistakes. A European RF equipment buyer chose low-cost 6063 aluminum for high-power heat dissipation cavities, resulting in poor heat conduction and equipment overheating; a lightweight new energy vehicle client blindly selected magnesium alloy without considering coastal salt fog environment, leading to serious surface corrosion within half a year; another medical device supplier used ordinary zinc alloy parts which failed disinfection liquid corrosion tests. These cases prove that buyers need systematic material comparison reference before confirming drawings.
In summary, aluminum alloy, zinc alloy, magnesium alloy and stainless steel are the four mainstream raw materials for precision metal components. Each material has unique advantages and inherent limitations. Below we break down their core performance, cost level, processing characteristics and suitable application scenarios one by one for your project reference.
1. Aluminum Alloy (6061 & 6063 Series, ADC12 Cast Aluminum)

Aluminum alloy is the most widely used material for telecommunication, heat dissipation and general electronic parts, divided into extruded aluminum profiles (6061/6063) and cast aluminum (ADC12).
Core Performance Features
- Ultra light density, good thermal conductivity, perfect for heat sink and RF signal transmission components;
- Supports Type I/II/III full series anodizing treatment, conductive coating can be processed for RF signal shielding;
- Excellent CNC machinability, can realize micron-level flatness and air tightness control for antenna cavity;
- Medium raw material cost, moderate processing expense, balanced overall cost performance.
Material Subdivision Difference
- 6063 Aluminum: Soft texture, easy extrusion & coloring, low cost, suitable for indoor general equipment shells, low-power antenna accessories;
- 6061 Aluminum: Higher hardness, better thermal conductivity and dimensional stability, the top choice for 5G RF cavity, high-power heat sink, structural load-bearing parts;
- ADC12 Cast Aluminum: Good liquidity for complex thin-wall die casting, ideal for irregular automotive and electronic housings without strict signal requirements.
Suitable Industries
2G/3G/4G/5G base station antenna cavity, automotive heat sink, medical instrument brackets, consumer electronic shells, outdoor communication equipment.
2. Zinc Alloy (Zamak 3 / Zamak 5)
Zinc alloy is the preferred material for complex thin-wall decorative housings and low-load electronic components via high-pressure die casting.
Core Performance Features
- Excellent casting fluidity, can form ultra-thin wall (0.6mm) complex curved structures with high surface finish;
- Low melting temperature, shorter mold production cycle, greatly reducing mass production processing cost;
- Good electroplating & decorative anodizing effect, rich color options for consumer products;
- Higher density than aluminum, heavier weight, poor thermal conductivity, not applicable for heat dissipation parts.
Suitable Industries
Outdoor surveillance camera housing, access control equipment shell, small consumer electronic accessories, low-load decorative structural parts, household hardware.
3. Magnesium Alloy

Magnesium alloy is the lightest commercial structural metal, specially developed for lightweight new energy vehicle projects.
Core Performance Features
- The lowest density among all casting alloys, 30% lighter than aluminum, realizing maximum vehicle weight reduction;
- Good electromagnetic shielding performance, thin-wall casting capacity;
- High material and processing cost, poor natural anti-corrosion ability, must match dedicated anti-rust surface treatment;
- Strict production environment control required, not suitable for long-term coastal salt fog exposure without high-grade coating.
Suitable Industries
New energy automobile lightweight brackets, EV motor housings, portable handheld electronic equipment, aerospace lightweight small structural parts.
4. Stainless Steel (303 / 304 / 316L)

Stainless steel is adopted for high corrosion resistance medical, marine and precision mechanical parts, only processed by CNC machining, unavailable for die casting.
Core Performance Features
- Outstanding acid & alkali corrosion resistance, 316L grade resists salt fog and medical disinfectant erosion;
- Ultra-high structural hardness and wear resistance, long service life under frequent friction;
- High raw material cost, difficult CNC cutting, longer processing time leading to higher unit processing price;
- Cannot do conductive anodizing, not fit for RF signal transmission components.
Suitable Industries
Medical surgical equipment parts, marine monitoring hardware, industrial wear-resistant fixtures, food processing equipment accessories.
Quick Material Selection Decision Checklist
- If your product is 5G RF antenna cavity / heat sink → Choose 6061 Extruded Aluminum
- If you need low-cost complex thin-wall decorative electronic housing → Choose Zamak Zinc Alloy
- If new energy vehicle lightweight design is your core demand → Choose Magnesium Alloy
- If medical/marine anti-corrosion and wear resistance are required → Choose 316L Stainless Steel
- If cost budget is limited for general indoor equipment shells → Choose 6063 Aluminum
