Custom Mold Development: The Foundation of High-Quality Precision Metal Manufacturing
Jokddy
Mold development is the starting point of mass production for almost all die cast components, CNC fixture parts and automated assembly solutions. A well-designed and precisely manufactured mold directly determines part dimensional accuracy, surface quality, production stability and overall manufacturing cost. If the mold structure, gating system, cooling channel or venting design is unreasonable, even high-precision CNC machines cannot compensate for the inherent defects formed during the early production stage.
As a one-stop precision metal parts manufacturer, Zhongzhu Technology has an independent mold workshop covering the whole process from 3D design, DFM review, machining, EDM, jig grinding, mold assembly to trial production. We do not simply make molds; we build production systems that support stable mass production. Our mold development service ensures that each project can achieve consistent quality, reasonable cycle time and long-term maintainability from prototype verification to batch delivery.
In practice, many quality problems in die casting and CNC machining can be traced back to the mold stage, including flash, burrs, shrinkage cavities, deformation, poor filling and unstable assembly tolerance. Therefore, mold development should not be regarded as a separate pre-production step, but as a core engineering activity closely connected with product design, casting process, machining and quality inspection. Below we introduce our complete mold development system in detail.
1. Custom Die Cast Mold Development Service

Die cast mold development is the most complex type of mold manufacturing, requiring comprehensive consideration of material flow, cooling efficiency, venting, ejection and thermal deformation. Our engineering team completes the whole mold design and manufacturing process according to the specific characteristics of aluminum, zinc and magnesium alloy castings.
Core Service Scope
- Mold design and 3D modeling: Based on customer product drawings, we complete parting surface design, gating system design, overflow groove design, cooling channel layout and ejection structure design.
- DFM manufacturability review: Before formal mold manufacturing, we provide feedback on wall thickness, fillet, gate position, machining allowance and demolding structure to reduce future production risks.
- High-precision mold machining: We use CNC milling, EDM, wire cut and jig grinding equipment to complete mold cavity, core, insert and fixture machining.
- Mold assembly and trial production: After machining, we complete mold assembly, test run, sample inspection and dimension correction until the parts meet customer technical requirements.
- Mold maintenance and repair: During mass production, we provide regular cleaning, wear repair, venting optimization and service life extension services.
Main Mold Types
- Aluminum alloy die casting mold
- Zinc alloy die casting mold
- Magnesium alloy die casting mold
- Thin-wall component mold
- RF cavity housing mold
- Automotive structural part mold
2. CNC Fixture & Jig Design and Manufacturing

In addition to die casting molds, we also provide custom CNC fixture and jig development services for secondary machining, assembly, testing and batch production. A high-quality fixture system can greatly improve machining efficiency, reduce clamping error and ensure consistent dimensional tolerance in mass production.
Typical Fixture Applications
- CNC machining fixture: Used for milling, drilling, tapping and groove machining of die cast blanks, extruded aluminum profiles and solid metal workpieces.
- Inspection jig: Used for batch dimensional sorting, positioning detection and assembly verification.
- Assembly jig: Used for manual or semi-automatic assembly of metal parts, plastic parts and sealing components.
- Testing jig: Used for air tightness testing, conductivity testing, pressure testing and functional verification.
Fixture Material Selection
- Aluminum fixture: Lightweight, easy to machine, suitable for general CNC clamping and assembly positioning.
- Steel fixture: High hardness, good wear resistance, suitable for long-term mass production and high clamping force requirements.
- Phenolic resin fixture: Non-conductive and anti-scratch, suitable for surface-finished parts and appearance-sensitive products.
3. High-Precision Jig Grinding for Mold Components

Jig grinding is one of the most critical processes to ensure mold precision, especially for hardened mold steel, multi-hole positioning plates, mold inserts and complex inner contours. It can achieve extremely high hole position accuracy and form accuracy that ordinary CNC milling cannot guarantee.
Key Advantages of Jig Grinding
- Ultra-high positioning accuracy: Control hole position tolerance within 0.002mm, ensuring smooth assembly of mold inserts and fixture components.
- Hardened steel finishing: Can complete precision machining after mold heat treatment, avoiding secondary deformation.
- Complex inner contour finishing: Suitable for precision mold cavity, insert, pin hole and thin-wall mold structure finishing.
- Stable batch consistency: Reduce mold assembly difficulty and improve production yield in subsequent mass production.
Typical Jig Grinding Applications
- Mold core pin holes
- Multi-hole positioning plates
- Precision mold inserts
- EDM electrode fixtures
- High-precision CNC machining jigs
4. Our Mold Development Process
Our mold development follows a standardized engineering workflow to ensure transparency, quality control and on-time delivery.
Step 1: Drawing Review & DFM Analysis
The engineering team reviews the customer’s 3D drawings and provides optimization suggestions from the perspectives of casting, machining, surface treatment and assembly. This step helps avoid unnecessary mold modification and cost increase in the later stage.
Step 2: Mold Design & Structure Confirmation
Complete mold parting surface, gating system, cooling system, ejection system and venting system design. After customer confirmation, the project enters formal manufacturing stage.
Step 3: Mold Machining & EDM Processing
According to the mold structure, we complete CNC milling, drilling, tapping, wire cut and EDM processing. For high-precision parts, we further arrange jig grinding to ensure final tolerance.
Step 4: Mold Assembly & Trial Production
After all mold components are completed, the mold is assembled on the test machine for trial production. The first samples are inspected for dimension, appearance, filling condition and defect status.
Step 5: Mold Correction & Final Approval
If there are shrinkage, flash, cold shut or dimension deviation problems, we adjust the mold structure, venting, gate position or cooling system until the samples meet the customer’s approval standard.
Step 6: Mass Production & Mold Maintenance
After mold approval, the mold enters formal mass production. Our team regularly checks wear, cleaning, venting and sealing conditions to maintain stable production quality.
5. Mold Maintenance & Service Life Management
Mold service life directly affects production cost and delivery stability. We establish a complete mold maintenance system for each project.
Regular Maintenance Contents
- Mold surface cleaning and anti-rust treatment
- Venting slot cleaning and optimization
- Parting surface inspection and repair
- Ejection system lubrication and inspection
- Worn insert replacement
- Cooling channel pressure testing
- Mold storage and classification management
Mold Storage Standard
After the production order is completed, the mold is cleaned, inspected, anti-rust treated and stored with a complete mold file, including design drawings, maintenance records, trial production reports and batch production parameters. This ensures that the mold can be quickly restarted when the customer places a new order.
Conclusion
Mold is the core foundation of precision metal manufacturing. Whether it is die casting mass production, CNC secondary machining or automated assembly, the quality of mold and fixture directly determines the final product quality. At Zhongzhu Technology, we integrate mold design, machining, EDM, jig grinding, assembly, trial production and maintenance into a complete service system, providing customers with stable, efficient and high-precision custom mold solutions.
